More thoughts on Michigan

I am still thinking a lot about our trip to Michigan, even though we have been home for about two weeks now.  I do love it up there.  I try to keep a little bit of Michigan around me at home all the time.

I always buy Welch’s Grape Jelly.  They have a processing plant in town by my parent’s place in Utopia.  And there are vineyards all around that part of Michigan.  I like to pretend the grapes in the jelly came from those vineyards and were processed in that plant.

This is my new favorite beer.  It is called Lager of the Lakes by Bell’s Beer.  Their brewery is in Kalamazoo, MI.  This is what passes for The Big City in my parents’ neck of the woods.  Anyway, Lager of the Lakes is a nice lager, with more flavor than say Bud or Miller.  They make a stout beer too called Kalamazoo Stout.  I wish I liked stout beer just so I could have labels with the word “Kalamazoo” on it in my fridge.   I guess I could buy it for Tom.

I really love this song right now.  It’s the line “It was summertime in Northern Michigan” that gets me.  The kids like it too.  I always hear them singing along in the backseat.  It’s not the most appropriate song for eight and ten-year olds but I like to think the worst of it goes over their heads.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I like where I live just fine.  But I really look forward to those lazy days by the lake, and these little things just help keep that happy Michigan holiday feeling a little closer to the surface.
