Not much to report today. We spent most of the day in the apartment. The kids were tired from yesterday, plus we were waiting around for the University handyman to come look at our washing machine. It has an intermittent, small leak from somewhere that is not the front door where the clothes go in. Mysterious. So we waited around all afternoon but he never showed up. Not unlike American repairmen.
We did some schoolwork this afternoon. I try to do a little bit every day. And so far it is a very little bit. We are averaging about an hour a day. But that doesn’t include reading time. This is definitely the fly by the seat of your pants method of home schooling. I am assuming I will get better at it as we go along. The C-man has decided he wants to go back to regular school. This is the child who has asked me on an almost daily basis to home school him for the last two years. Grr. The children also seem to be having some trouble respecting my authority as teacher. I told the princess to do some math stuff, and she said, “You aren’t in charge of me”. After my blood pressure went back to normal I informed her that I was, in fact, in charge for at least the next 11 years and she better get used to it. I’m afraid I may have said it rather loudly.
This school stuff is tricky, and I probably should have prepared better before I left. It’s too late for that now though, so we will just have to muddle through the best we can. I need to do a better job of planning ahead. I should try to work out what we will do tomorrow tonight, and then work on what we will do on Monday tomorrow. Maybe that will help. I am feeling really guilty about this. They will never get into Harvard now, and it will all be my fault.
After school we had a matinee viewing of The Empire Strikes Back on my laptop.
So, today was not the best day. Tomorrow will be better. For one thing we won’t be stuck in the apartment. And for another, I was reading the Lonely Planet Rome guide, and they mentioned a really good bakery that, according to my calculations, should be right around the corner.
That book also lists their top 5 favorite gelaterias. We will have to check those out as well. I don’t think we will do that tomorrow though. And we probably won’t do all five in one day. I think that’s too much ice cream, even for me.
Oh, and I don’t know if you noticed, but I set up a page with some photos of the apartment. Go look at the top of this page to find it.
