At last, we have arrived!

January 4, 2008

We’re here! I can hardly believe it.  I can hardly believe I have the energy to type anything at all.  I have entered the hallucinatory phase of jet lag.  I did not sleep at all on the plane.  Why?  Well, the flight landed at about 7am Roman time.  This is midnight in the Midwest, and that, my friends, is when I usually go to bed.  So I have been awake for about 27 hours straight now.  I am swimming through a thick sea of jet lag where everything seems to be moving slightly, and I can’t believe it isn’t even 5pm yet as I type this.  I will never make it to a respectable bedtime.  I shudder to think what this entry would look like without spell-check.

We took a taxi from the airport to the apartment.  I don’t think I have ever been in a Roman taxi before.  In fact, I am sure of it, because I don’t think I would ever have forgotten it.  First of all, let me just say that the taxi drivers at the airport drive Mercedes sedans.  Nice.  Then, I decided very early in the trip that the best way to avoid a full-blown panic attack was to think of it as a cross between an amusement park style thrill ride and a video game.  I have never seen anybody drive like this guy.  Lane markers meant nothing to him, even when they were separating us from THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC.  As if that wasn’t enough, I don’t think he ever dropped much below 50 mph in the city.  You really had to see it to believe it.  And I am so glad I saw it, and survived it.  And now that I have survived it, I must admit, it was pretty impressive.

Our apartment is nice.  It’s a little chilly, or maybe that’s just me.  I am always cold when I am tired.  We have actual working radiators though, so that’s a good thing.  I will try to take some pictures this weekend and post them.

We went for a walk this afternoon and ate at the very traditional Roman restaurant called McDonalds.  I know, I know, there is no excuse for that.  But the C-man hardly ate a thing on the plane and neither did Princess O, and I wanted to be sure they would eat.  Tomorrow we will meet P and M and Friends 1 & 2 for lunch.  We will try something more adventurous then.  Like maybe a cheese sandwich.

Next on the agenda is make dinner.  Hopefully without burning anything or blowing anything up.  We went to the supermarket today.  It is in the basement of a department store.  In short, it is the Italian Marks & Spencer’s.  I love Marks & Spencer’s.  Tonight the first of what I am sure will be many pasta dishes.  I can’t possibly mess that up can I?
